Doing an MBA in South Africa vs. Abroad

Hello everybody,

I had a quick question. I currently live and work in Johannesburg, and would like to do an MBA. I'm mainly considering business schools here, including Wits and Pretoria. How are these schools perceived internationally? Is there any benefit to doing an MBA abroad, say in Europe or the US? I'd like to stay in South Africa for the foreseeable future, but am also considering moving to Hong Kong.

The good part about Wits and Pretoria is that they have part time programs, so I could keep working while I go to school.

I think that only UCT and Stellenbosch have real international reputations and, of course, Henley, which has a big operation in South Africa.

With knowing your background and goals, it's hard to say what you should do but, generally, better programmes have more impact. A few years working in Hong Kong would certainly boost your career.

I generally agree that doing your MBA in Hong Kong would give your career a boost, but I would question its impact for growth in South Africa. Of the top MBA programs in Hong Kong, only HKUST has any kind of alumni network in South Africa, and it's pretty small.

Henley would be a great choice to "play the field" between SA and HK, because the school has good networks in each place.

Thanks for the advice!

I think I'm going to apply to UCT and Stellenbosch - they would be more of an investment, but seem to be worth it in the long run.
