Research associate group in Canada
Posted May 11, 2020 17:47
Hello everyone, I completed my BBA from North South University, Bangladesh in 2014 and had experience working in a local bank (treasury department) for 3.5 years. My major was in finance and accounting. Recently, I decided to pursue a research-based MBA in Canada. Currently, I am working full-time with financial research clients all over the world.
Can anyone help me to find me finance research associate groups/community where I can ask help from the MBA research students regarding research opportunities in Canada?
I am preferring the following universities but open for any suggestions-
1. Vancouver | NYIT
2. Vancouver Island University
3. Thompson Rivers University (TRU)
4. Royal Roads University
5. University Canada West (UCW)
6. University of Regina - Kenneth Levene Graduate School of Business
7. Ryerson University - Ted Rogers School of Management
8. University of Victoria - Peter B. Gustavson School of Business
9. University of Alberta - School of Business
10. Memorial University of Newfoundland
11. University of Manitoba - Asper School of Business
12. University of Saskatchewan - Edwards School of Business
Eagerly Waiting for your guidance.
Thanks in advance.

Since it's such a practical degree, an MBA isn't really the best way to get into research.
What are your goals? If you're focused on research, why not look into a PhD instead?

I also used to work in an Investment Bank's treasury department. So when you say research, I assume you mean Equity Research or Fixed-Income Research? Or do you mean Phd type research?
Equity Research positions are highly prestigious positions that require a top-tier degree. Unfortunately, none of the schools you listed would get you an Equity Research job in Canada. Even going to Rotman won't guarantee an equity research position (it's that competitive). My company has the #1 ranked equity research team in Canada. Everyone in that team has degrees from Harvard/Wharton/INSEAD or won some type of international recognition.

I know this is old, but just so everyone knows, there are research (thesis) based MBA in Canada. University of Calgary (Haskayne) Thesis MBA, TRU graduate thesis stream MBA, etc. While not popular, some Canadian universities do offer them, either stated directly or indirectly via their multi semesters/courses research electives. So you might have to read the fine prints to see if they are offered along with the typical (more known) capstone/project/course route MBA.
