Hi there,

Does anyone know how many hours per week you would likely need to commit to an online MBA, specifically at Durham uni?

I'm considering applying for the Durham Online MBA, but am slightly concerned by my friend who did an online MBA at Bradford telling me that their estimate of 15 hours per week was a gross underestimate, and that to do all the required reading, tutorials etc. would be more like 35 hours per week.

He has already done a Masters elsewhere and I know he is quite strong academically, so if he feels that an online MBA requires more than 30 hours per week, that does concern me.
As I'm working a full-time job, I think that 15 hours would realistically be about the most I could commit on a regular basis.

I spent 14-15 hours per week in average (less at the beginning of the semester and significantly more as the workshops and semester's final papers were coming) with good results. I studied the part time MBA at AMBS when the program was 3 years long (now is 2 years, I think). If your program is shorter you have to increase your weekly effort but, of course, it depends on other factors too.

Hi Billy, I'm currently on the course (doing my 3rd module) so far I've spent 10 to 15 hours a week. For the 3 so far its been about 9 weeks of learning (some had a week break in the middle to allow anyone who needed to catch up) then there's been 4 to 5 weeks to complete the assessments. It'll vary with your experience I guess and how much of the recommended reading you want to do. Hasn't taken up 35 hours of my time on any week or anyone else that I've spoken to on the course.

Just as a note, I've found it is crucial to plan ahead and balance your time, for example I try and get ahead if I have a quiet work week because if I have a busy 60 hour+ week it makes it more challenging to do 15 hours on top.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions, I agonised so much over which MBA to choose so if I can make it less painful for someone else by sharing I'm happy to.

Hello,
I am really interested in Global MBA/part time MBA at AMBS, what is your experience about the program? And would you recommend it? I am engineering background and pursue to become a Project/Program leader in the future (at least that is my current plan and can be changed after MBA if I have better opportunity)

Hi,

You can read about my opinions along with others' ones on different threads of this site. Generally speaking I was satisfied with the AMBS. From the academical and practical "hands on" experiences, I would say that the program was a good one, although the career's service is very weak (but, of course, AMBS is not pouring too much effort in it as it is a part time program). At the time I studied there they used to have an Engineering and Project Management special track, I don't know if they still maintain it now!? If not, I think that maybe you can choose the Eng/PM courses for the existing 3 elective courses? Check with them.
