The Lisbon MBA

Hi, I've read about this upcoming program this January 2009. It's called the Lisbon MBA (www.thelisbonmba.com), a joint venture between Nova and Catolica, the top two business schools in Portugal. I find it interesting, since even though it is just a one-year program, there is a mandatory summer internship. Aside from that, it has ties with MIT Sloan School of Management, wherein you will spend two weeks at MIT. The 30,000 Euros tuition includes the travel to and accommodation at MIT. However, it does not include textbooks and living expenses. Still, if this program will succeed in the next 4 to 5 years, this may be a bargain!

One more plus: as of now, it's accredited by AMBA and EQUIS, but not yet AACSB.

What do you think about this program? Personally, I find it intersting. And since I'm planning to pursue an MBA, this program may just be on my list within the next two years or so. Any comments will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I agree, it does look interesting. I think you're right, though, to look at it as something to keep an eye on, see how it develops over the next few years. I know from personal experience that new programmes generally take time to bed down - in fact the first year is often a bit of a shambles - and even longer to gain a good reputation in the outside world. Also, I notice that the Lisbon MBA hasn't yet precisely worked out its admissions criteria - a sign, perhaps, that they're waiting to see who and how many people apply before they make any decisions which might rule anyone out.

Hi Lukeh,

Thanks for your opinion. It should be watched for a while, especially it has not even started yet! But given the reputation of the two Portuguese universities, Catolica and Nova, in Europe, I think it's on the right track, rather than creating a new institution, like say, the European School of Management and Technology or Barcelona Management Institute (no offense to those two institutions, though). What I'm saying is that most likely, ESMT and BMI will take a longer time to be "known" in the business world compared to universities that have been already existing.

I hope more people, especially Europeans, can give thier input on this program, the Lisbon MBA.

I am a current student at the Lisbon MBA program 2010. This is a very well structured highly competitive program with a strong focus on personality development and career management as well.

good to hear from you. I am originally from Kolkata, India and I was working for nealry 4 years in a multinational consultancy firm before applying to the Lisbon MBA program last year.

I am now living in Lisbon since the program started in January and I am finding the program to be a great and challenging experience.

I'm not sure how the course list for the current semester can be valuable to you for assessing an MBA program. If you need information on the curriculum, I suggest you check the official web site of the Lisbon MBA ( its a great site with lots of detailed information ) or get in touch with the admissions committee. They are very helpful and will provide you with all the course related info that you need.

As a student of the program I will be happy to share with you my experience with the program which has been great so far. The first two semesters are focused on attaining the core managerial skills and concepts such as statistics, economics, finance and marketing. This is followed by a period of 3 weeks at MIT Sloan campus in Boston and a two month internship. After this you complete that last two semesters where you will have the option to take electives, that is specialise in subjects of your interest.
