Vlerick Versus Trinity Business School

Dear all,

I am from India, a 31 years old Engineering Grad with 6.5 GPA (v.low) and 7 years of experiences in Manufacturing and Sales in a few countries in South East Asia. I am looking for a career in Private Equity research post my MBA. For which I have taken some certification courses in CFI Institute. Before the admissions next year I plan to give my hand in CFA 1 if things go well.

Since my fav location to work post MBA would be Europe/UK. I am looking for an MBA that would supplement my Finance course and open doors for me in PE firms in UK/Europe. I am considering schools that gives waiver for GMAT as I will be focussing more on my Finance related prep certs before I join my MBA. I have found Trinity Business School and Vlerick Business School as there is either an alternative or waiver for standardised tests. I am also open to alternative suggestions.

Kindly throw in your valued opinions. Thank you for your help and suggestions.

PS: I am not considering MS or MIF options given my age and professional cum educational background, which could be wrong but that's what my research yielded me. Again, suggestions are welcome here too.

Honestly, there are very few jobs in PE and they are unlikely to go to someone with an MBA from a school that doesn't require the GMAT. I assume your Dutch skills are not at the levels needed to work in Flanders.

Shortlisting schools based on not taking the GMAT is an extremely bad idea. Especially for somebody on a finance track (the adcomms will be looking for a strong GMAT score as a signal of quantitative capabilities).

Neither of these schools will help you with PE. You'll need to look into a school that has strong relationships with PE firms (LBS comes to mind).

But they usually do not have the jobs BECAUSE of the MBA but because of prior experience.
It is impossible to land a PE job without PE/VC/IB or at least (!) MBB experience prior. Sorry for being so negative but this is just an realistic assessment.

Also when it comes to the mentioned MBAs I would disagree with aslamo - OxBridge may recruit at Undergrad level but not the (subpar) MBAs.

Your best approach:
1.) Be realistic - PE will be SUPER super super super (SUPER) hard for you to get into. You don´t have relevant experience and are competing against people that are i) younger and ii) have experience + iii) elite education
2.) Aim for the top 3 FT MBA schools in Europe (if Europe is relevant for you): Insead, LBS, IESE and try to find adjacent jobs that may not be PE but still interesting for you. LBS is IMO the best shot but this best shot is still HARDCORE UNREALISTIC looking at your profile
3.) again - be realistic: I honestly do not think that you are i) a competitive candidate for PE nor for IB and ii) a competitive candidate at the top3 target schools (ORM, Low GPA, no gold-dust CV, no stunning GMAT).

My advice: take a step back and re-adjust your goals based on a reality check

That's good advice. You can get out of the LBS program, and even if you don't get into PE you will surely have a good shot at jobs in other parts of finance.

Again being a buzzkill: looking at the profile admission for the MBA at LBS is very unrealistic (age, no gold dust, competitive applicant group, ...). The same applies for all of the Tier 1/1- schools (INSEAD, LBS, IESE, HEC, IMD).
The best bet regarding the profile would probably be IMD (due to industry experience) but they lost a bit of relevance from my perspective and are not focused on finance.

I would advice as a next step: Re-evaluate the goals and then re-select schools + pull out a killer GMAT (this could bring Tier 1/1- at reach level but still reach).
Your problem is, sorry for being so blunt, that you supposedly lack any gold-dust. To make this worse you are coming from a especially competitive group of applicants. To make this even more worse you have a low gpa and no brand-name employers. Deliver a killer GMAT and some schools may take this gamble.

Again - sincerest apologies for being a negative nancy but I felt being blunt may serve you best.
