Age matters? (Career Switch)

Dear All,

I'm getting mixed messages and I'm facing a dilemma...Could I still do an MBA and change my career at the age of 31? What kind of opportunities would I have after getting an MBA? Would I have to start at a really low position? My background is in television, more specifically in business news and I've also worked in financial PR. Do you think it would be a big switch to move into another field like marketing, business development at my age? I don't want to get my hopes up and then fall on my face because doing an MBA is a massive investment. What do you think? Any comments would be much appreciated.

Today, people switch careers and functions much more than even 10 years ago. It's not unheard of.

I wouldn't try to shift too far, or into anything that requires a lot of specific knowledge (managing an engineering plant, or information technology, for example.)

I'd think that your skills might be valuable in a transition. Your PR experience could give you leverage in marketing, for example.

What MBA programs are you looking at specifically? You could always try to do one that has an internship or project component - hands-on experience in your chosen field goes a long way in this job market.

I think you'll find it very easy to move into marketing or business development. Just focus on a niche that is growing now, and still will be growing in three or four years.
