MBA in Europe with 12yrs of Work Ex

Hello Everyone!

I’m Tanushree currently based in Mumbai and looking to finally pursue my MBA. I’m specifically looking at Europe, mainly UK and 2 schools in France - INSEAD and HEC.

I have over 12yrs of experience in marketing which includes digital and on ground marketing for beauty and fashion brands. I have delved with fashion and beauty brands my entire career span and I have also handled independent projects which have dealt with luxury and fashion.

I have 2 objectives to do my MBA - 1. I have extensive experience in start ups but require technical proper knowledge to move to a more corporate role 2. I want to work abroad.

Unfortunately some of the schools I’m writing to - namely Warwick and Imperial has flat out said I’m way too experienced for the MBA.

My dream list is -

1.Judge Business School
2.HEC
3.Said Business School
4.LBS
5.INSEAD

I haven’t given my GMAT yet, I am not good with exams but I know I have to score here.

What would be a realistic addition to this list of colleges for me? I really need some intelligent insight here.

ESSEC and Bocconi is the obvious choice for luxury, and Bocconi is the better fit considering your age. You are way too old for Insead, sorry. If you are not too good at exams, an MBA at a top school will be a challenge.

Right, Duncan. A good gmat score is important. I’m working on that. And thanks for your response. I have already written to ESSEC and apparently I’m too old for them too. :) all the MBA schools (except LBS, Judge and Said) I’ve written to love my profile but feel I’m way too experienced. I can’t do an EMBA - doesn’t make sense for me. So I pretty much have to do an MBA. So I don’t have a lot of options.

Yes, if you want a full-time programme then you'll either need a specialized masters or an MBA with older average age, like Bocconi, Cambridge or Cranfield. Since many people in Mumbai cannot work at a high professional level in French, perhaps an option might be a full-time language course alongside the EMILUX masters at ESSEC or Bocconi?

Thank you for the suggestion. I’m gravitating towards the former part of your advice namely applying to MBA programs that are more suitable for my age and experience. I’m primarily focusing on UK universities considering the ease of post study visas for Indians.

Side note - not really sure taking a full time French language course + EmiLUX would be an economically feasible or realistic idea because my French wouldn’t be as good as someone’s from a French origin.

In an intensive French course, you would be reasonably fluent (B2) in half a year and after a year you'd have more accurate French than many native speakers. Indeed, it's more likely that you would be hired *because* you are foreign, into an export-oriented role, than being hired *despite* being foreign. An intensive French (or Italian) language year at a state university (or Università per Stranieri) alongside EMILUX would cost you less than a top MBA. In France, the 'allocation' would also cover much of your rent.

If you are focussed on the UK, then LBS would be the natural target: https://find-mba.com/lists/top-business-school-by-speciality/top-business-schools-for-luxury-brand-management Consider their MiF or the Sloan Fellowship masters.
