Refresher MBAs

Has anybody had any experience with business education post-MBA?

I received my MBA from Texas A&M (Mays) in 2006, and have had a few good years of career growth (from a financial analyst to mid-level management in an energy finance firm.) I recently was laid off from my position in a recent round of layoffs, and am now looking for a way to get back on my feet.

I understand that there are a few business schools that offer "refresher MBAs" that are for people who want to get up to speed with new advances in business. I found something like this at Aston in the UK and IE Business School in Spain. These are short 1-2 day programs - but is there something out there that's more substantial (a two-week program, or perhaps something modular?)

I'm in the MBA refesher programme at Ashridge, which has typically been annual workshops, alternating between three days and one day. Kellogg had the Renaissance programme, but I think that's closed.

I think the closest thing might be the MBA+ at the University of Edinburgh, which allows students to come in an take week-long options. Two options on the same topic plus a major project equal a specialisation certificate, in one of five or so areas.

What about executive education? Relatively close to you is UT Austin - McCombs, that offers a range of courses specifically catering to people in the energy industry. In a course like "Energy, Technology, and Policy," for example, you'd get a big picture view of the energy industry, which may benefit you if you'd like shift functions away from finance.

Or you can look for other options - I know that HEC Paris offers a certificate in energy - you'd attend modules in Paris and Doha.

A good question to ask yourself is if you want to remain in your industry and functional role, or switch into something else.
