MBA Canada - McGill / Schulich (or wait for Rotman??)

Hi everybody, I have offers for McGill and Schulich right now. I have also applied to Rotman but no news there yet.

I'm a bit torn. I work in finance in my home country and would like to move into the financial sector in Canada.

McGill - pros:
- currently ranked best MBA in Canada by the FT
- lower tuition rate
- lower cost of living

McGill - cons:
- not in Toronto
- not well known for finance

Schulich - pros:
- in Toronto, close to financial services
- reasonably good for finance

Schulich - cons:
- higher tuition cost
- higher cost of living (renting a flat, food)
- not ranked in the FT

I hope to hear back from Rotman soon. If I get in there the pros / cons will change a bit... Any insight so far?

McGil has reasonable connections with financial services firms, and many grads actually do end up in Toronto. It's not a bad choice for your goals.

However, if you got into Rotman, I'd think that that school might have a slight edge over McGill, if only because of the location. I don't think Schulich is the best choice for your situation.

For anybody else wondering, I've heard that the Rotman decisions will be coming down at the end of February. Apparently they have received more international applications than they expected this year.

If you want to work in finance in Canada, I would only recommend that you go to rotman or ivey.

I've applied to Schulich but I will probably apply to one or two other schools in Canada as well. I want to work in finance (in Canada).

I am skeptical about Rotman because I have heard some negative reviews but I am open to it. Which of these schools should I focus on?

Ivey
Rotman
Queen's

There are negative reviews about everything. That's why the quantified data are so useful.

What sort of finance do you want to do? Which MBA programs have the best-placed alumni in that field in your target cities in Canada?

Ivey or McGill, maybe? Those tend to have strong representation in the financial industry. But if you're considering this level of school I'm not really understanding why you are looking at Schulich.

Hi Laurie,

By that, do you mean that Schulich is not at the same level as the other schools? I had heard mixed reviews about Schulich and was also apprehensive due to it's absence from FT rankings; however I was reassured by a few that it's almost in the same league.

Can you please clarify on this, and shed some light on the reasons?

The absence from the FT is a good indication, in that this ranking tracks salary development over three years after graduation. It's a very reliable indicator of quality.

But just compare current salary data as well, Schulich does worse than Rotman, Ivey, etc.

Also, Ivey also does not feature in the list despite only positive reviews existing and the salaries being competitive in comparison. Do you have a probable idea as to why Ivey does not feature?
