Ryerson Global MBA vs Ryerson MBA (MTI)

Hey guys,

I am an Account Manager in the Consumer Electronics industry with an work ex of 5.5 years by the time i start my MBA. I intend to get into Marketing and Social media post MBA. Also, i don't want to spend a fortune on my MBA. In addition to schools like Rotman and Schulich, i also found the Ryerson MBA, which seems very promising.

However, i am not sure about whether i should apply to the Global MBA with a concentration in Marketing or do the MBA (MTI) with a concentration in Media Management. I don't to over specialize and restrict job prospects post MBA. At the same time, i want to really hone my digital marketing skills and acquire expert status during the program.

GMAT score: 650
TOEFL- 115/120

Would really appreciate it if someone who has studied here/is studying here/has researched about the program could share their experiences.

Also is the program a 1 year program or a 2 year, because i have seen varied information at different forums. I believe you get a 3 year Canadian work permit if you do a 2 year program. Any idea how long a permit you get for a 1 year program?

How would either of these programmes help you to "hone digital marketing skills and acquire expert status during the program"? I don't see any content relating to that.

They are one year, three-term, courses.

Why not look into Schulich's Marketing concentration? It's a ranked school, which would mean better career options after graduating. Plus, their marketing faculty is pretty top-notch.

In any case, I'm not convinced that you would need anything special beyond a general marketing concentration to work in the digital space. All the elements are essentially the same, and any accredited MBA program will cover general marketing concepts in enough detail.

Thanks Ralph. That does make sense.

I am applying to Schulich as well, but what is attracting me to Ryerson is the lower tuition fees. I don't want to spend years paying off my MBA loan.

The only challenge however, is that the ryerson program is a 1 year MBA, which means i will get a 1 year work permit, as opposed to the 3 year work permit with a 2 year MBA.

Thanks for your advice.

I have heard that Rotman is better for Finance whereas Schulich for Marketing. Furthermore, their tuition fees are also very different. In addition, many students say that ultimately, a graduate from either of these schools competes for the same jobs, so if your focus is marketing, then Schulich is a better bet.

Finally, i have read that the Rotman program is more quant and finance focused.

Which one is the better choice as far as ROI and chances for a post mba marketing job are concerned? - assuming i get an admit from both these colleges.

Regardless of how either school is trying to position itself, neither has exemplary placements into marketing functions; students usually pursue these MBAs as routes into Toronto's finance industry.

However, Schulich's marketing concentration does provide a closer look at the full range of topics in marketing. But, Rotman's integrated curriculum is arguably a better approach to tackling today's marketing issues.

I'd say look closely at the curriculum and even reach out to faculty in each school's marketing department, to see what might be a better fit.
