Hi,
I am Koushik from India. I have 7yrs of work experience in fields like FMCG's,Telecommunication and Retail segment. I have completedmy grad and also diploma course in Management. I am into sales and marketing and wanted to extend my scope by adding value with MBA degree.
My GMAT score is not that great as I was not able to focus too much. Very Recently I have an offer from HHL. If someone could helpme with the decision. Should I go for it? How far the programe is valued? Germany is not a problem and neither the language but the position, job prospects,company and opportunity do matters. May I have a concreate idea so that I donot get biased and take a decision which involve huge financial decision making.

Hi Koushik,

HHL is not the top choice in Germany (those are Mannheim, St. Gallen and WHU), but a solid school. They are AACSB accredited and a much better choice than ESMT, EBS or GISMA. One problem of HHL is that is located in former Eastern Germany. That means that it is far away from the business centers like Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich or Düsseldorf.

I have to agree with Johnny on that matter. although a respectable school, the HHL is in Leipzig, a city that if a bit far from the business centers of Germany(fanny thing, it was once one of the most important trade centers of Europe). they have, however, what seems to be a good career service and corporate Relations. take a look at the placement statistics they publish:

it seems that most HHL students find jobs in consulting firms and the banking sector.

another plus point for this school is that Leipzig is a kind of student city - lots of young people and a lot going on.

I do agree that it is away from business hub, but I fail to understand that how that effects my job prospects? There must be a campusing or do I need to search for the job? What kind of profile they offer? Will I be able to pay back my edu loan? Please throw some light, I am really confuse.

Hi Boris,

The problem is that this statistics is based on the Diploma (= Msc) graduates placement. Concerning this program, HHL is a good choice in Germany. But the quality of HHL's MBA graduates cannot keep up with the Diploma. This is my impression from having a look at their CV books. Thus, the placement for them is not that good and I doubt that they find jobs in the same companies.

I would not think that HHL's location is a disadvantage. Firstly, the Leipzig/Dresden area is quite strong economically . You have chip manufacturers and car makers in Dresden. Apart from that, all other major cities in Germany are within a three hours drive. Don't forget that Germany is a small country with a dense population.

Has anyone participated in an HHL Info Day? Would be interesting to hear what they actually tell you about their MBA placements.

I agree with you that it is economically the strongest region in East Germany, but by far behind Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart or Cologne!!! It is really hard to find a job there and that is one of the disadvantages of that school compared to Mannheim or Frankfurt.

Hi guys, interesting threat here. I have an alternative for you Koushik: check out the Master of Law & Business offered by WHU and Bucerius Law School. It is not an MBA as such but a combo of, well, business and law concepts. I was considering an MBA myself but decided to go for this programme as the law side appealed to me (NB: I have an undergrad in business). It?s two top schools and an interesting concept. It might be well worth checking it out, just to have another alternative? See: http://www.bucerius.whu.edu/ Good luck!

Joking aside: given Koushik?s background with a management degree, I think it might indeed be interesting to pursue this route: the MLB combines the business side with (relevant) legal aspects and thus offers a bit more for someone who has seen the business concepts before. Many of the WHU MBA professors are doing courses here and you get an overview of the legal side too which was the big plus for me having a bachelor in business.
