Profile Evaluation Full-Time MBA (GMAT 700)

Hi, :)

I'll give you a few details of my profile and would love to have any kind of feedback on what schools my profile would fit into and if my chances are decent at the schools I've decided to apply to. Please feel free to let me know if something in particular doesn't work out.

To start with, my GMAT score is 700 (45 quant, 41 verbal)
Undergraduate degree - B.E., Chemical Engineering from MSRIT, Bangalore
CGPA: 7.42 out of 10

I have 1 year, 3 months of post undergrad work ex working as an academic author in digital media for an education company called ANSR Source. I will have 2 years of work ex before start of school in Fall, 2016.

I am looking for a career change and planning to do an MBA specialized in either Supply Chain Management or Marketing. I look to take over my father's company after a few years. Father's got a trading company that mediates exports of about 13000 tons of coffee a year on average to Europe. He's started a new company looking to get his coffee products into the retail market (this is my main area of interest). A lot of detail related to these companies and my goals in these companies has gone into my essays. Of course, the greatest motivation for the MBA is for me to learn about transforming a small time business into a growing self-sustainable organization.

Finally, I am also a writer. I have a book, Silhouettes of the Sunset (poetry/essays) published by Createspace.

The schools I have decided to apply to are the following,

Wisconsin School of Business
Northeastern University
Portland State University
SUNY Buffalo
Bentley University (ELMBA)
Purdue (Krannert)

And to stretch it,

Indiana University (Kelley)

I would love to have your feedback on my chances at these schools and if you have any other schools in mind, please do share them with me!

Wisconsin and to a lesser extent Northeastern would be great choices, considering their strengths in your interest areas.

Your weakness when applying to Wisconsin and most of the rest of the schools on your list is your lower than average work experience. For these schools, in your essays, you'll have to make it clear why an MBA is right for you now, and let them know that you're ready for it.

Northeastern is doable, as is Buffalo, and I think you have fairly good chances at these schools. The networks you'd get with a degree from Wisconsin, Krannert and Kelley would be much broader. I think I'd look at Bentley and PSU as reach schools.

When you say reach schools, do you mean the general class profile of these schools is beyond mine and my chances are really low here? Just wanted some clarification. Cause according to my research Wisconsin and Northeastern seem to be much higher ranked schools than Bentley and PSU.

how did you get 700 in GMAT ??
my test is after month and i can't get even 350 :(
if you can help me .. just tell me how didiyou prepare for the test

Hi, Violen,

To start with, don't fret too much. The GMAT is not a test that takes eons of time to understand. To begin with, make sure you first familiarize yourself with the format of the test (the format of every section including the essay and the integrated reasoning section).
Do not and I repeat do not keep taking practice tests to see how much you would score! This would only end up discouraging you. Considering the range in which you are scoring, I suggest you sign up for a prep course. Don't spend too much money on these. You have Manhattan, Kaplan, Veritas, Magoosh, etc. Go through their course descriptions and choose the one that suits your schedule best.
Identify the areas that are you strengths and work on these Don't spend too much time trying to crack problems that you find very difficult. Magoosh has amazing videos for the quant section, these videos really helped me and I highly recommend their course. Also, make sure you grab the official GMAT guide. Solving the questions in the official guide is the most important to understanding how real questions on the test look like!
And finally, you get two free mock tests from the MBA website. These are probably the most accurate simulations of the real test!

I think you are aiming low with SUNY Buffalo, Portland.

Maybe look at Penn State, Michigan State, Arizona State, Purdue (you already are looking at this one), Wisconsin.

In US, usually the 1st year of MBA is generic, in 2nd year - selection of few electives makes a student "concentrate" in Marketing or SCM.

Apply to the best school that you can get into. It will provide you a better education and be a great addition to your resume.
