MBA - Help in choosing

Hi
I am considering an MBA in either Leeds or Manchester, idealy full time but will consider part time (I will be self funded). I have chosen these two simply as I live in Yorkshire and cannot consider moving too far due to family commitments. I have run my own company for the last 9 years and have decided that I would like to move in to an executive position in local council, government or possibly a new entrepreneurial role. I would also be interested in consultancy. Which of these schools would be best in my situation, or do you have any other advice on my best options.

Did you see the Masters in Public Administration at Manchester Business School? http://www.mbs.ac.uk:8080/programmes/mpa/ Manchester ran the Civil Service College's MBA, and has excellent public sector skills.

If you preferred the enterpreneurial route, then the Global MBA at Manchester has an excellent project focus which would suit well.

You might also consider Warwick Business School, which offers both a PGDip and Masters in Public Leadership & Management. These are offered part-time.

It's a big change to move from the private to public sector. Many private sector management skills will be sharper than in the public sector. However, the public sector demands an additional array of skills, such as how to work effectively in a Party political environment and how to deliver through collaboration with multiple agencies. For these reasons, it may not be as easy as it should to switch sector. A good school like Warwick or Manchester ought to be able to help.

The public sector needs more people with private sector expertise. You may well find it more rewarding to work in the public sector and make a difference. Good luck!
