Sheffield Vs Nottingham

Hi,

I have received unconditional offers from Sheffield, Nottingham and Leeds. Also received conditional offer (which should become unconditional based on IELTS soon) from Glasgow too. I had initially decided on Nottingham but since Sheffield offered me an automatic scholarship of GBP 2000 i am thoroughly confused b/w the two. Also i may be in the running for another Indian student scholarship of GBP 6500. I know that Nott is ranked above Sheff for MBA but overall univ rankings are better for sheff but would anybody actually see rankings while employing a person. I guess if companies visit campuses for recruitment it would be the case but if you are on your own in the job market people would just look at overall university reputation. And by the way i have also applied to Strathclyde, Southampton and Birmingham. Havent heard from Southampton, strathclyde asked some questions and birmingham is still processing the application.
This is my view but i need all your views on this subject.

From that list only Strathclyde, Birmingham, Leeds, and Nottingham presently have good MBA programs; in terms of rankings as well as reputation. I would not suggest other B-Schools from that list.

I guess if companies visit campuses for recruitment it would be the case but if you are on your own in the job market people would just look at overall university reputation.

That's a reasonable guess but a look at the FT rankings will show you that it's mistaken. Schools like Strathclyde, Birmingham and Leeds get around $100,000 starting salaries for their MBAs - much more than unranked programmes - and that's not because most of their students get jobs from campus visits. Better schools recruit better students and, as a result, the graduating class is better. That produces more employable graduates and better connected alumni.

I would ask Sheffield about average salaries for graduates; it looks like a very academic course. Southampton will, I guess, have better outcomes since it's a wealthier town.

Your guess is right: The most recent Economist rankings say that Sheffield's post-MBA salaries average about $64,000 whereas Southampton's is just over $75,000.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your comments. I have received an unconditional offer from Strathclyde too. No news from Birmingham and Southampton. But i have decided to take the plunge with Nottingham after a long thought. I had even spoken to some students from Nott and seem impressed with the University and its MBA programme.

My profile is 6.5 yrs work exp in the Middle East in EPC business in QA/QC discipline. My GMAT score is only 600 but my acads have been consistently in the mid 70s-80s percentage from school.

Hope that my decision is right.
