HELP - Prospective MBA Programs

Hi,

So I'm currently an Undergrad (Junior) at U of M - Ann Arbor and majoring in Econ. I'm worried my low GPA (3.0) and possibly even worse before I graduate will hold me back from getting into MBA programs. I know it doesn't matter now, but I have worked ever since I was 16 and I'm aware that most MBA programs require 'real' work experience. But what is typical? 2-4 years? I'm not entirely sure where I would score on a GMAT test but that seems far away for me now. But what should I be aiming for?

Are there any other "good" schools outside of U of M towards the eastern side of the state that would be worth to get an MBA from? For instance - Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, Michigan State, Michigan -Dearborn etc. I do not know if I can get into U of M's program. Just going to this school alone for undergrad is very competitive and if I'm not towards the top already I doubt they would accept me.

Take a look at this: http://bit.ly/MI_MBAs In the middle of the page you can see the mean GPAs and GMAT scores. I'd suggest you stop worrying about MBAs until after graduation, and instead focus on pushing up your GPA. You might be able to convince universities to look at the years with the highest GPA...

Thanks for your help. Also, does it really matter what major you have? Are boards more willing to accept business majors rather than other social science majors? I can surely have a better GPA if I elect to major in something differently but I think there are more career opportunities with having an Econ major as I feel it is more practical.

I do think I should take your advice when you say to not worry so much about it now, as I have awhile before I start the process but it's just something that's been on my mind lately. Thanks again for your help.

Since lots of business, economics and engineering majors apply for MBAs, you'll be more interesting to admissions teams if your degree is in something else. But it really don't matter that much at the Michigan schools you're targetting. If you get a decent GMAT to make up for the weak GPA you will be fine.

Stop worrying about the future; Focus on the present, and try to have a little fun. I know one friend who got what in Britain is called a third class degree (one notch above failing) and was admitted in to five of the six top-ranked schools he applied for -- by havingabove average work experience and GMAT.

I'm not sure what it's equivalent to in the UK but it's basically a B average. I mean it's not incredibly low but it's low in the sense that I would be below average in programs like the Ross School of Business (University of Michigan) in my opinion. But this also included a lot of pre requisite classes too, typically GPA's go even further down as you get into higher level classes (at least with my friends and my experiences).

I agree that it's probably too early for you to worry about MBA programs. Focus on getting your GPA up and finishing undergrad. A lot can change in the next few years that will affect your MBA prospects.
