Is the MSC engineering management program in the UK equivalent to masters in engineering management in the US?

To answer your first question, an MBA would probably be better, depending on your aspirations and the quality of the programs you are thinking about. If you are comparing Duke's MEM program with an MBA from the University of Phoenix, then I think Duke would probably be the better option.

But on more equal turf (Colorado/Boulder's MEM vs. an MBA from ASU, the MBA would probably be better.

It also depends on if you are planning on going right to work after graduating, or if you plan on pursuing more academic goals. If, say, you are interested in getting a PhD, then an MEM or an MSc could be better.

I would like to go to work immediately after the MEM or MBA. I have heard that having an MBA early can make you overqualified for certain entry jobs and under-qualified for senior management positions due to the number of years of experience.. Your thoughts sir on this and which would be better sir.
By the way sir, The MSc in the UK is it equivalent to an MEM in the US?

I've just finished my engineering, and have no work experience, so i applied for freshers MBA to Aberdeen Uni, and have gotten my offer from there. But now, due to the whole visa issue, i'm a little apprehensive, specially also cause of the ongoing job situtaion. I was wondering if maybe MEM from Duke or Stanford would benefit me more? being an engineer give me an added advantage? Or i should stick with Aberdeen? people keep saying it depends on the type of work i want to do later, but i don't know the kind of work i want to do in the future. You need a career goal, not an MBA. Duke and Stanford are better, but only if your career goal fits that programme.

I don't want to be typecast into the role of an engineer who did MBA just for the sake of earning money. That is a priority, but i want to do something that would interest me. Maybe something in the line or environmental/sustainable development. Would MBA help me in that field?

What matters is what you do want, not what you don't want. Typecasting is other people's problem, not yours.

This is why I always recommend that people go out and work for at least three years before even thinking about an MBA. The degree provides a practical and theoretical framework that's meant to be applied to real-world experience. If you don't have any of that, what would be the point?

Hi everyone, sorry to bump an old thread but I need advice on the same matter. I have a work experience of 5 years in the engineering domain and now want to learn about the business functions of an organization. I have been offered an MBA from University of Manitoba and Engineering Management from University of Ottawa. The univ of Ottawa is higher ranked, but the program seems to accommodate recent graduates or students with an experience of 2-3 years. I would appreciate any help for helping me find the right direction. Is it better going to a higher ranked university with good location vs a popular programme with a mediocre location.My intake is in September and would be really helpful if someone can throw a light on my quandary.

These are both nicely designed and highly flexible degrees. Manitoba's September start allows a 12-month completion, but is a 60-credit degree compared to 30 credits at Ottowa. So, I guess sit depends on how big a career leap you want: small step, Ottowa; big step Manitoba. The MBA experience will be much better, especially because you will study alongside both full-time and flex students, expanding your network and getting a lot of insight into businesses.

A friend of mine teaches in Winnipeg. I think one reads a lot about how unsafe the North End of Winnipeg is at night: I think the rest of Winnipeg is much like any other post-industrial city. The university is a dozen kilometers away from there and I just don't see why international students would ever need to go to the North End at night. I think the MBA is obviously much better for finance or consulting since they don't require engineering skills.
