Kiel is much better. It's a real university, rather than a Fachhochschule and has an excellent PhD in quantitative economics and finance.

I think it is wise to be worried. Start learning German. Kiel has a huge asset: the institute for the world economy which has had a world famous programme for decades. As a city Kiel is smaller and less cosmopolitan.

Indeed. I think that at either of these programs, you'll be fine in class, but if you are trying to land a job afterwards, you're going to need the language. The schools may provide language classes which could help - I believe you'd be able to take classes through the language department at HWR Berlin, but I'm not sure about Kiel. Check with them.

I will consider it carefully, I just wonder that is there any chance that a FH in the "capital city" like HWR Berlin would tend to have better international program (taught in English) than a Uni in a not so metropolitan city like Kiel? The selection process of HWR Berlin seems to be tougher than Uni Kiel's (Some of my friends only got admitted to Uni Kiel while rejected by HWR)

And can I bother you guys a little more? I recently got admitted to University of Marburg for the course "MSc in Economics and Institutions" and I'm also pending for the admission from Ruhr University of Bochum (the course is "MSc in Economics). What do you think of these two universities comparing to Uni Kiel and HWR Berlin?

No, I find it unthinkable that the teaching quality will be better at HWR. Kiel is top class PhD centre for these questions. Selectivity is different. Everyone wants to go to Berlin because it is Berlin. Maybe HWR gets more applicants than HHL? That's not really the point. what are the outcomes? Ask the schools.

That's a good point -you might want to think about these cities in terms of networking opportunities. Depending on what industry you're interested in, they'll each offer something unique. Kiel is a port town, so there may be jobs in shipping, logistics, etc. Berlin's economy is sort of all over the place: some biotech, media, communications. Neither city really offers what Munich or Frankfurt has in terms of financial services, manufacturing, etc.

I don't think they claim to be the top finance programme in the German speaking region; they claim to be one of the top two schools for finance research. I think it makes better sense to study at a programme in a CFA partners school or internationally-accredited university.
