Bath MBA or Birmingham MBA

Hello everyone,

My best friend holds offers from University of Bath & University of Birmingham for their September 2022 MBA programmes.
She knows that the University of Birmingham is a Russell group University and the University of Bath isn't. The only problem is that Birmingham only offers specialised MBA programmes. So, she holds a Birmingham offer for *MBA-International Business*.
We've been trying to decide which MBA programme will be more beneficial in the long-run using factors such as; Quality of the programme, Job opportunities, Alumni network, Ranking & Location of school.
She is presently a financial analyst in Nigeria and her goal is that through this MBA, she will be able to transition into a role in the UK as a in-house business strategist.
Also, Bath is GBP7,000 more expensive than Birmingham but she doesn't want fees to be a determining factor. I'm posting this on her behalf because she's not on this forum.

When you use those factors, what is your initial assessment? For example, if you scored each school out of ten on those criteria and added them up?

We both have factors we prefer in each school. She thinks the alumni & programme structure of Bath is better and there is also an option of internship after the program but Birmingham does not offer that. I think due to Birmingham's reputation and the fact that the school is in the 2nd largest city in the UK, she might have better chances of getting a job in the city after her studies.

We are just wondering whether a specialised MBA in international business is inferior to a regular MBA like the one offered at Bath.

Yes, I understand the benefits of the GMAT but my friend has stated that due to work and family constraints (she's married with 2 little kids). She therefore, wouldn't be able to study for the exam in time and apply before the international application deadlines for 2022 and going to school this year was the plan she made with her husband . Also, she personally doesn't mind not getting into LBS, Bayes, Oxford etc. According to her "These schools get thousands of applications yearly and they can't take in everyone, should we all then give up on our plans of getting a good MBA education if we can't get into an ivy league?"

I'm not very patient with self-limiting beliefs. Indeed, not everyone can get into the Ivy League. I actually have studied at an Ivy League university, Dartmouth, and it's way, way better than any almost university in my own country. Your friend should attend the best schools available for her goal. Even if she takes the GMAT and gets a low score, that allows better schools to consider her. Very few Nigerian mothers apply to top MBAs and many schools will actively seek her out. Bayes, Durham and Warwick are worth considering.
