I'm afraid you are probably right - top notch business schools would usually not admit people with low GMAT scores! it seems that it is especially true to applicants from India, as discussed here:

so what you are asking for is almost a paradox - good business schools that admit people with low GMAT! in my opinion, you should take the GMAT test again, and then apply to reputable MBA programs. otherwise you are bound to get disappointed, or end up compromising on the quality of the school.

Thank you Andy for your reply and yes, I am an Indian. I appreciate your fair comment that with this low GMAT, my chances of admit to a good B school are bleak. Even my good extracurriculars, academic profile and different background didnt help. But then, I want to join an MBA by 2009 fall and do not have the time (to be true, patience, too!!) to appear for a GMAT again. Having said that, could you evaluate my chances of getting an admit to the schools mentioned by me or let me know of any such schools which could possibly accept me with this low GMAT. If some details on my profile are required, pl let me know.

I can only confirm what Andy writes I'm afraid. Either you take your GMAT again with better result, or the schools mentioned in your first post are out of reach, and generally speaking the good schools. This is also valid for Owen Vanderbilt...

Your chances for Union graduate Healthcare could be quite good - the school is not ranked nor otherwise known - but then you have to think if all the effort and money is worth it to end up with an unknown MBA. Maybe it is known in the health care sector I can't tell.

I wish to apply for MBA in USA and interested in consultancy.

I did B.Sc. chemistry honors , M.SC. organic chemistry from Hindu college Delhi university ,
research project for 1 and half year at Delhi University.
Presently working with fortune 500 oil and petroleum company as R&D officer (scientist) researching on lubricants in addition to this I am handling another charge of Quality Control Department as QC officer for last 2 and half year.By the time I join it will be 3 years work experience apart from the experience of 1 and half year on research project at DU . My performance has been bright in the company.
got good extracurricular activities and community services.
But the major hitch is my GMAT score which is 610, TOEFL 102.
Can you please suggest me which B school should I apply considering the fact that I wont be able to retake GMAT and want to apply for fall 2009.

A 610 gmat is not exceptional, but is fine for getting you admitted as long as everything else is good. You could get in most places with a 610 I think as long as you turn in a stellar application with well written essays explaining why you're an excellent candidate.

And, yes, being female does help at most schools because there aren't nearly as many women that apply to MBA programs (although I'm sure that is changing each year.)

I don't know the scale for the language test!

Might you try some state universities? They tend to have solid programs but often not as stringent on admission requirements. A 540 GMAT is NOT bad. It's about average -- so not going to get you in a top program; but it is very decent. Just make sure the rest of your application is really good. A friend of mine got the same score you did and is going to the University of Akron in Ohio.

ANY University on that list has a decent program. People who say you have to go to a top ranked school to be successful are just wrong. Yes, it helps for networking with big wigs. But the quality of education is not much better in a lot of cases. You can always do your own networking; go to a university in a large city and there will be lots of opportunities. There are good business schools all over the country that don't have such high admission standards. You can look at the Businessweek profile and see the average GMAT scores at different universities:

For some reason they don't include profiles for unranked schools under the full-time tab. But click on the tab for "part-time" programs. You'll see a list of schools, and when you click on one to get the profile it will give you the information for both the part-time and the full-time programs.
